Swiftcurrent Lake and the Many Glacier Hotel - 1918

The exterior was originally decorated in a western type of swiss style and modernization of the building has preserved many of these features.

Many Glacier Hotel - 1915

When the Many Glacier Hotel opened in 1915 it immediately grew popular with horse parties, as the area still had far better trail access than the primitive motor high- way, which tended to be muddy and rutted.

The lobby and rooms above opened in 1915 and the annex was constructed the next year.

The columns supporting the lobby are giant logs several stories tall.

The lobby of the Many Glacier Hotel was initally decorated with oriental hanging lanterns, enormous framed landscapes, woven rugs, mounts and skins draped over the railings.

A circular staircase with a fountain running down the center was eventually removed due to noise coming from the bar room downstairs during the late evening hours.

The other end of the lobby has a unique, very large circular fireplace which is still used during the summer months.

Skylights in the ceiling admit dramatic shafts of illumination as the angle of the sun changes through the day.

The Many Glacier Hotel is open from about the first of June through mid-September.

It is operated by Glacier Park Inc.

Glacier Park Lodge

First of the "big tree" lodges to be constructed, Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier, Mt. required it's own railway siding to transport the giant columns to the building site.

The Glacier Park Lodge

The original decoration was somewhat western and featured native motifs on interior walls, the paper oriental lanterns again and tipis erected on the front lawn.

Today's visitors still marvel at the huge timbers which support the lofty lobby.

Many of the original oil paintings commissioned by the Great Northern Railway remain along the upper balconies that overlook the lobby.

The railway depot is just a few hundred yards distant, so the path to the hotel was turned into an elaborate garden to welcome the weary railway passenger.

Many tours started from this hotel, both horse parties and by motor car. The Blackfeet Highway was eventually improved which permitted The Glacier Park Lodgeprivate vehicles to drive the entire length of the rugged east side of Glacier National Park.

Glacier Park Lodge. is operated by Glacier Park Inc. and is open from June through mid-September.
