Expected To Start First Week Of July, 2009
Specifics have not been released regarding the third season of the popular shuttle operation. It is planned to begin operation prior to the Independence Day holiday on July 4th.
Summer 2007 was the first season for the free shuttle system that ran along Going-to-the-Sun Road.
This program was an instant success, and twice the projected number of riders took advantage of the new service.
Although hikers made up a large number of riders, many were just visitors enjoying the scenic ride without having to drive. Drivers with oversize vehicles should take advantage of this service.
Larger busses will be available this summer and 15 stops are planned along Going-to-the-Sun Road at trailheads, points of interest and at Logan Pass.
A new transit center with ample parking, large rigs included, at the intersection near Apgar on the west end of the road. Restrooms and exhibits are also located here.
The eastern terminal is near the visitor's center near St. Mary. Construction may be encountered at St. Mary.
Funding for the free shuttle service along Going-to-the-Sun Road is provided by Glacier National Park visitor park entry fees.
2009 Opening Date Pending
Along the eastern edge a pay shuttle system runs from Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton, Alberta, to Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier, with stops at Many Glacier Hotel and St. Mary along the way.
This service is offered by Glacier Park Inc.
